The city is believed to have been named by railroad workers who replaced its original name, La Vega de Los Vigiles or Vigil’s Meadow. It was not until 1900 that the 13 square mile railroad town became officially called Española.

Bond House Museum

The historic Bond House serves as the Plaza de Espanola’s anchor facility. It was listed on the State Register of Historic Places in 1978 and the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. In 1982, the Bond House launched its first displays as a museum, thanks to the San Gabriel Historical Society.

Plaza de Española

Plaza de Española is a small arts and culture complex centered on the Convento, a replica church modeled after a historic mission in the area. The Northern New Mexico Regional Art Center is a gallery and gift shop that displays and sells work by local artists next to the Convento.
